This is maybe TMI, but I’ve had two very different Met experiences. The first one, with Tory [Burch], was a full day of glam and preparation. I was in a white dress and felt like it was my wedding. My sister kept yelling, “You’re getting married to your career!” I had hours of hair and makeup and nails and a facial. And then last year, up until the last minute, I was like, Am I going? At noon on the day of the gala, I got a text asking if I wanted to go. My friend Yael Quint, who is a genius stylist, had this Miss Sohee dress just in case, and I got ready in two hours. So, there’s no right or wrong way. But the luxury of time is probably most important.
As a host, I think it’s drastically different. I have to talk to people with a microphone! I’m going to try as hard as I can to be normal, but it’s going to be a challenge for me. Not that I’m socially awkward, but I do think talking with people helps. What’s cool about being on SNL, and kind of humiliating too, is that a lot of people at the Met Gala are people who have hosted or performed on the show. So that means that when I see them, I’m like, “Hey!” but I don’t actually know if they remember me. People ask this about SNL a lot. I only get nervous when it’s live and we haven’t rehearsed enough. And guess what? This is going to be live. It seems like your sense of humor would be the perfect remedy for that. How does one bring humor to the Met Gala, an event that could seem quite serious?
